our first day

Wednesday, 8-30-17

The Kindergarteners were incredibly brave on our first day. We talked about feeling worried or nervous and how it's okay to feel that way, especially when in a new school with a new community. We read one of my favorite books, Wemberly Worried. We went on a tour of the school, learning new names, spaces, and how to be safe and responsible when in the classroom and the hallway. The children met many teachers and adults, they were welcoming and kind!

The day was full of learning about how to be safe at school and developing expectations together. This is an important time in our year, as we begin building relationships and establishing routines. We talked about listening to one another today and ensuring that voices are heard. Having one speaker during a meeting can be challenging and takes practice, but it is an essential classroom expectation as we move into a year full of conversations, community meetings, and collaboration!

We went on a tour of the school and practiced lining up in different kinds of lines - sometimes straight, sometimes curved. We stretched and moved. The children had PE class in the morning. Rest was a welcomed opportunity for the children to have their own time and space, to breathe, and for some - to sleep. We ended our day talking about how we take care of writing tools. The children explored markers through their design of a cover for their Friday folders.

Coming together for our first morning meeting,
we practiced every name!
Following snack, a read aloud with Ms. Lewis.

Learning about different kinds of lines as we walk down the hallway. When in the hallway we have a straight line, but sometimes we have to curve the line to go around a corner. Sometimes a line can have a zig zag, sometimes it can go up and sometimes it can go down. Sometimes it can be long and sometimes it can be short. We have 19 Kindergarteners in our line, so we have a long line! We visited the Library on our school tour.

Following rest, the children explored markers, working on a cover for their Friday folders. During this time, some children continued to sleep. The Kindergarteners reminded one another and myself to keep our voices low, so that our new friends can sleep. This is one of the most powerful parts of rest; when a child falls asleep, their peers ensure that they get the rest they need. We practiced giving ourselves a hug at the end of the day, recognizing the hard work and love of all
