a further exploration of shapes and construction...

Later in the week, I introduced polydrons, another tool used for exploring the properties of shapes. Constructing and playing with polydrons supports children's understanding of geometric shapes, encourages the children to expand on their mathematical and scientific thinking and reasoning, and invites conversation amongst one another!

We talked about the words cube and pyramid.
We counted how many flat shapes it took to build a three-dimensional shape.

IM - "Can you show me how you built that?"
OC - "Sure. You have to connect the squares on the bottom and the triangles on the top - watch!"
