word scientists

The children have continued to eagerly listen and search for the blends and digraphs in words. We have studied words in various ways, looking at consonant blends and exploring both short and long vowel sounds. Like true word scientists, the children have examined words closely, carefully dissecting and recording their findings.

Much of their explorations have been during our morning meeting. Using symbols to categorize the vowels, children have noted the short and long vowels in our message. On the first day of Spring we looked at the word Spring ; noticing the ing at the end, the one vowel, and the 6 letters! Spring also has a blend at the beginning.

It is important for the children to have opportunities to unbuild the words in their environment, providing further phonological support and encouraging their growth as readers and writers. You may hear your child talk about words inside of words, as this has continued to be an exciting find for the children! Our morning message work continues to be a powerful part in our day. Perhaps you and your child would like to go on a vowel search this weekend? Or look for digraphs - partnerships? If you do, record your findings!

The children transfer their developing knowledge about language to their private and partner reading, again searching for sight words, words inside of words, blends and digraphs!
